I have enjoyed listening to your podcast for quite some time now; however, after this podcast I can no longer subscribe. As much as I enjoy the show I can not listen to someone call military personnel weak and defenseless. I served 5 years in the 82nd Airborne Division and have deployed twice overseas.
I am sorry for offending you to this degree.
It wasn’t my intention to portray the US military personnel as weak or defenseless. My comments were much more general, and were aimed at religious leaders who spend more time attacking science then they do condemning armed conflict…
I do believe that in youth we have a weakness of perspective on the life ahead of us…
Young people, of any nation, who enter the military do so for similar reasons – patriotism, sense of duty, bravery of spirit – regardless of the nation they represent… this is true of our troops, and those of our enemies as well…
I’ve been to veterans hospitals, I have seen the strength of will, I remember a quadruple amputee yelling for the nurse to change his bed pan, then asking her out for a date…
Old soldiers don’t fade away, they go on fighting, against injury and depressing surroundings. I respect the spirit and sacrifice… I owe my freedom to men like that. But what I owe them is not more of what the have been through, but less of it… You don’t honor fallen soldiers with war, you honor them with peace.
Peace is not easy, it’s hard. It’s not a lack of action, it’s a constant proactive activity. The victories take place in the hearts and minds, in legal treaties and in tearing down social barriers across boarders… It all starts with words.
Standing up against military reliance on youth in general, I have gotten a large negative reaction from the members of the US military who listen to the show…
I am sorry for those we have lost as listeners… but not for the message itself.
I will defend that message of peace with or without you…
