Hi, long-time podcast listener, first-time writer. While listening to the 2009.03.10 episode, I noticed (among other things) the mention of songs about Pi. In case no one else has pointed this out yet, Kate Bush has a song titled “Pi” on her 2005 album, Aerial, which includes a recitation of a significant portion of this number. Enjoy.
You don’t ‘need’ pi to decide if the two medium pizzas are a better deal than one large – just square the radii (or diameters or circumferences for that matter), if the sum of the two medium’s squares is greater than the large’s square …. you get the point – you don’t need actual area just relative areas to make the choice (assuming that crust length is a negligible consideration…)
